Eligibility
- High school junior
- Plan on pursuing a career in journalism
- Must be a current high school junior (rising senior by the time of the conference) who will graduate in 2027
- Interested in journalism or multimedia storytelling (including documentaries, photo essays, podcasts or other digital media) and free expression
- Must be a free spirit, which can mean someone who is a risk-taker, a visionary, an innovative leader, an entrepreneur or a courageous achiever
- Available to attend the entire conference in person June 21-26, 2026
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
- Applicants must reside in one of the 50 states or Washington, D.C.
Description
The Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference focuses on the role the First Amendment has in democracy and aims to inspire high school students to pursue journalism careers. The program selects 51 high school students who plan on pursuing a career in journalism to participate in an all-expense-paid journalism training conference at the Newseum. Those who successfully complete the five-day workshop will be awarded $1,000 scholarships.
